Fire Marshal (Part-time)
The Village is hiring a part-time Fire Marshal within the Department of Building & Zoning. We’re looking for a well-rounded individual that has experience as a Fire Marshal or professional within Fire Service, that can work independently and interface with the public in a fair and respectful manner.
Minimum Requirements:
New York State Code Enforcement Official certification
New York State driver’s license
Details:
$32.50 per hour, up to a maximum of 20 hours per week, within the Department of Building & Zoning and under supervision of the Chief Building Inspector.
Hours are flexible, but preferences will be given for candidates who have, at least, some availability during normal Departmental business hours (M-F 8:30-4:30).
Job Duties:
Ideally, we’re looking for a professional with good working knowledge of modern firefighting and prevention techniques and of typical sources of fire hazards; the laws, rules and regulations governing fire safety, firefighting, fire prevention and detection; modern developments and current literature available and sources of information pertaining to the fields of fire safety and detection, fire education and fire protection; and methods used for investigation of hazardous conditions.
Candidates should be able to explain pertinent provisions of laws and regulations to property owners, county and municipal officials and the public; enforce fire safety laws with fairness, tact and impartiality; express themself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; prepare fire prevention permits & associated correspondence; and maintain those records.
Typical work activities include, but are not limited to, plan review for the applicable Fire Code requirements of proposed commercial buildings, alterations to existing commercial buildings, and installations of and/or modifications to fire protective service features; the issuance of Fire Prevention permits and operating permits, with assistance from clerical staff; and the inspection of buildings and installations to verify Fire Code compliance with applicable State & local laws and any associated fire prevention and/or operating permits.
Additional duties may include the issuance of violations; reinspection of premises where violations are discovered to ensure their correction; and issuance of summonses where dangerous violations persist.
The Village may also require assistance in preparing plans and/or make recommendations for fire safety, fire detection and evacuation, mitigation, response and recovery procedures.
